I don't have words to really express how sad and angry I am right now.

Burms are on the Lacey Act...along with yellow condas and afrocks.

What I really want to say would get me banned (and possibly arrested). WTH, DOI??

Today marks a dark day for a hobby, and industry, a lifestyle, and a passion.

'tics, green condas, boa constrictors, and a few others are still on the chopping block and I'm afraid aren't too awful far from making the list.

the legislation may suck for pet dealers, but it's a question of whether the health of the everglades is more important than the commercial interests of some herp dealers. And it is.

RandyRemington Jan 18, 2012 12:33 AM

But they are already in the Everglades. If they actually do believe they could survive anywhere else wouldn't they think they will eventually get there on their own? Is there really any evidence they can survive even in mid Florida? I just don't see a scenario where the ban can do any good. Maybe some of us could get on board with some level of freedom infringement if there would MAYBE be ANY benefit at all to the legislation. It seems very un-American to place restrictions without a very strong case for a greater good. Even the imagination report recognizes many states with no risk so why should there be a national restriction? Let the states other than Florida do their own research and find out they can't live there before enacting their own restrictions. Let’s vote all the bums involved with this OUT!

If we were that concerned with the environmental impact of our pets, we'd do everything that we could to round up and destroy every cat in the US. They are already entrenched in EVERY part oF EVERY state killing multiple specimens of multiple native species DAILY. Burmese pythons only have a noteworthy presence in a PART of ONE state.

Please note also that there are also feral cats in the everglades as well-eating the same
species that the burms do.

This doesn't just mean the feral cats released by irresponsible cat owners but also any house cat that is allowed outside ever.

So, sure, if we want to play the "environment game," let's do the most effective thing we can. After cat owners have made their sacrifice, reptile owners will make theirs.

conserve Jan 18, 2012 10:28 AM

Agreed. And how about gardeners? People don't realize the changing environment caused by the introduction of non-native, invasive plants. Forestes have changed dramatically over the decades due to this, but few people can ID plants and so it all looks "normal". The changing plant communities have had dramatic, negative effects on plants and wildlife, and yet many of these plants are still for sale at your local garden center.

Big pythons get peoples attention, and are great for news stories, that's why there was such swift action.

voodoomagik Jan 18, 2012 01:04 PM

Thank you!

Of course, I would never support any movement to ban cats, but, exactly as you said, I feel that snakes are getting picked on because they’re so easy to turn into villains. It doesn’t sound as good to say “let’s ban Burmese pythons because they’re scary to us because we’re ignorant about them.” We promote ourselves as being based in logic and reason so we need to create other rationalizations such as the environment to justify creating laws that fly in the face of what our country is all about.

Let’s at least admit that this isn’t about conservation but about funding running out for the Everglades that Bill Nelson is trying to replace for his state. It’s also about re-election. I think many people thought that they could garner funds and popularity with voters by passing a Bill that they considered a “done deal.”

I think the mentality was that “no one cares about snakes.” They thought the Bill would go through with no resistance and that, in a Congress which has passed less legislation than all or most others, they could get their names into the history books as being some of the few Members of Congress to have actually passed something. I think they were surprised when the Reptile Nation showed up.

I don’t keep burms but I support your right to do so. (Boas are my thing.) I believe that we should work to overturn this rule change. I know that many of you do a wonderful and responsible job in doing what you do. I know that you have spent many hours and dollars to take good care of them. I know that a few “bad apples” have made a negative impact but believe that the norm is a responsible keeper.

I’m so sorry, you guys. Don’t give up though. I’m hoping USARK is working on something to reverse the damage done.

As a fellow keeper, I know how angry and sad you all must be.

...as the spaceman senator who dropped the ball on the space coast where a LOT of jobs here in Fl have been lost. The only way he has a chance of winning re-election is if his opponent ends up being Casey Anthony. In that scenario, my vote is definitely for Casey Anthony.

voodoomagik Jan 20, 2012 08:43 AM

That's exactly what I think.
Who am I going to vote for?
Whoever has the best chance of beating Nelson.

Hummm, What Reptile Breeder in Florida could take Nelson's place? Bill Brant? Gecko mascot! Wayne Hill? "I'll need an extra thousand dollors a table this year to get'ter done" Bill or Cathy Love? Mark Bell? " I'll put a red/white/blue Cornsnake in every home" Tom Crutchfield!!!? Campane Slogan "Best you've ever seen) Ray or Mike Van Nostrm? (cool campane signs, Lizard King for Senitor) Doug Foster!(who) I'm joking but maybe we should have groumed someone way back. VM

Arachnobaron Feb 12, 2012 01:29 PM

I think we should bring the idea of lawsuit to USARK and support them. I wanna see the Reptile Nation sue the govt!

I say screw the environment. It's got a hell of a lot of problems in the glades and the only way to fix that is burn the glades down. Hell, maybe then the burm ban would be even more useless!

simias Jan 18, 2012 02:28 PM

I agree that housecats, feral or not, are a huge threat to endangered species, mainly songbirds. But not to Key deer and large wading birds, and everything smaller....you're not going to get cat eradication legislation passed.....

voodoomagik Jan 18, 2012 02:37 PM

Nor would I want to as I said in a previous post.
Like the other people that are responding are telling you:
This isn't about the ecosystem.
This is about politics and special interest groups.

varanid Jan 18, 2012 10:57 AM

This does NOTHING to combat the problem of the (established, breeding) population that's been in the glades for the last few decades.

This ecosystem vs. pet trade stance on what has happened couldn't be more naive.

I heard it is snowing somewhere in the US, so lets spread salt on the roads nationwide. See the relationship? Is it logical?
