Filter for 40 Gallon Breeder

angryteller Jan 18, 2012 03:47 PM

I have two juvenile Sliders, one Yellow Belly and one Red Eared. They are currently about 3 inches and in a 10 gallon tank, swimming happliy.
I recently purchased a 40 gallon breeder for them and am getting really frustrated with trying to find an appropriate filtration system. Every filter I find sold in a pet store or online is pretty much only good for babies, meaning the best it can handle is 6 inches deep of water.
I am aware that I will eventually need a bigger tank, but I am hoping to get a few good years out of this 40. I am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction for a filter.
There is no way these guys are gonna be happy in 4 to 6 inches of water! Help please

i have that 40 gal tank as well. i use an outside of the tank cannister filter - the magnum 350 by marineland. works great. had it for 6 years now.

Fluval makes some excellent submersible filters. I use a couple of them in my 50 gallon long, which is set up with a ramp & shelf in one end, with the shelf being about an inch above the foot of water.

Thank you both for your advice. I ended up using two tetrafauna reptifilters that I had, side by side. They are working great with my six inch water level right now. Water is crystal clear for well over a week at a time. When the babes get bigger, and need deeper water, I'll be sure to check out your suggestions. Thanks again
