Burm market in the next 60 days

laurarfl Jan 19, 2012 09:05 AM

I was curious to see what the Burmese python market will be like in the next 60 days. I've seen people talk about buying Burms now while they can still be shipped. I wonder if prices will go up and then down during the last week. Just musings I guess. I've thought about getting a normal, but not sure I want two pythons.

Iv seen alot of Wanted ads for burms in the past few days. I think there is will alot of collectors buying what ever they can or what morph they dont have. But I see alot of owners of normal and albinos will want to dump them, imo.. We shall wait and see.
PS- I always wanted a lucy female, wink wink.

Suppose kingsnake would host a database of all known Burmese python morphs with some sort of anonymous yet accountable login where each morph could be claimed for each state? My thinking is some way to expose possible holes where a state does not yet have a given morph and encourage a breeder in that state to obtain one for future in state sales. Certainly the interstate ban would still be crippling to the market but it seems like our duty to minimize the effect of this rule change as much as possible.

Interesting idea to be sure, but one big flaw in it, other than of course finding enough people in all 47 states (or however many allow people to keep burms) who are willing to keep a large number of giant snakes. WIthout a relatively large breeding pool in each state, within a few generations severe inbreeding depression would begin setting in and traits like eyelessness and scalelessness, as well as traits that can lead to immunosupression may begin to surface. The more likely scenario is that people will have to settle for mostly normal or common mutations and only states with large populations would see a diversity. That, and very likely many people will just begin resorting to black market practices anyway.

Not all will agree, but I think you're spot on correct, and your PS comment at the end embodies what I've seen so far. Many of the genuine die-hard Burmese enthusiasts have been waiting for prices to drop on rare morphs to an affordable price, and are now scrambling to get their designer dream python while they still can. These people don't care if one day they can't ship the animal's offspring across state lines one day because they don't ever plan on letting it leaving their possession once acquired. I've sold several animals TODAY, all to people who are aware of the upcoming shipping prohibition and contacted me for exactly that reason.

I have an amazing hypo granite that I could sell today and ship tomorrow for a profit, but I'll keep it for the rest of it's life because I think it's awesome, and I want watch it grow into the crazy purple and yellow leviathan it will one day become. It's not about the profitability, it's about the passion.

PS. I know a guy who could help you with that desire to own a lucy female burm, wink wink.

Id love to bring one home, but right now I could barely afford half of what they are listed on KS

There's talk of a federal law suit to reverse the Rule Change.
Keep that in mind and please keep checking the forums because we'll all need to work together.
I know it doesn't feel like it sometimes, but there are a lot of Boa and Ball Python people that are still thinking of you (like me!) and are ready, willing and preparing to take action on your (and therefore our and everyone's) behalf.

as long as this current administration is in office, this decision will not likely be reversed. the only hope in reversing this decision is for an administration change with the next election.

Oh yes, lets make this into a partisan issue. That's sure to unite everyone and get things accomplished.

I suppose it's not likely the sort of issue we could get any candidate to consider much less state a position. Even if they did obviously many wouldn't make it the issue to override all their other leanings but some might be on the fence enough to make it a factor. Those will just have to judge for themselves which party has more propensity for restricting personal liberty.

That aint going to happen! As much as I hate to even say it. Even if it did what makes you think Republi-cons would change it! Look at the Ohio Gov.Super-duper Fox News Conservative John Kicass. Liberals started it, Republi-cons are "putting out fire with gassoline'db This IS the POST AMERICA way of doing things. My first Burmese Python changed my life! It lit the fuse! It inspired me to explore Herpetology and everything else that ended in"ology".It is the reason my home is serounded with a man made rain forest! It is what got me through the hard times life puts on you sometimes. Yes a Burmese Python did this for me! I would be someone else. I wouldnt have friends all over the USA that shared the same inspiration! This is a stinking shame. I've [bleep]ed to my Rep's and got the same insulting form letter everyone else gets. Their not going to budge. What Congressman is going to trot up a crying Mother sobing about her Sons hobby has been taken away. SOB STORIES! anyone got one? That is what it takes. VM

You can't go by party. You have to go by individuals.

If you guys remember, in Florida we were having what seemed to be a bunch of productive meeting with FL Fish and Wildlife about burms and they seemed to be going well.
Then, all of a sudden, it was literally over the weekend where our state government officials called a closed door lat minute meeting and passed a bill to turn burms into ROCs. It was done quickly and quietly so it passed unanimously.
Both of the people that sponsored the bill were republicans and, since it was unanimous, all other republicans and democrats also voted for it.

I'm planning on identifying anyone that has proposed, supported or voted for any kind of reptile ban and voting for the person most likely to beat them. At this point in my life, reptiles are my most important politically driving issue. Unfortunately, it seems that the ONLY thing both that Republicans and Democrats can agree on is this. We have to vote them out one by one.
