The nicest silver suboc?

Kevin Saunders Jan 28, 2012 10:06 PM

Everyone has their own taste in subocs (and any other snake for that matter), and this girl is my ideal axanthic blonde. I just had to have her when I saw her available and I could not be happier with her. I'm probably the only one that thinks she's so special, but I thought I'd show her off anyway.

(I love that high contrast symmetrical pattern)

She eats like there's no tomorrow-definitely doesn't have the dainty appetite this species sometimes has a reputation for. The young male I got for her is another story though. He's super mellow, explores all the time, and is a real joy other than the fact that he hardly eats. He maintains great body weight, but he'll only take a small pinky every other week or so. Hopefully he'll start to follow her example soon enough.

Awesome snakes. Just got a new one myself. ...and locality (Davis Mts.) normal which has sort of a raw look and probably won't wind up really clean. But subocs seen to have such gentle sweet personalities that looks are secondary Of course, your's are looking pretty dang good

I like that one too-nice and dark, not like your typical lighter colored subocs (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Actually, I think I like that look better than some lighter and "cleaner" ones, Brad. It may end up a nice red too being Davis Mts. locale...

Thanks guys. Toby - funny you say that as in the KS ad picture he looked orangish to my color-blind eyes. ...but not so now. I do like the super clean normals but this one is likely F1. Do Davis Mts animals tend to go reddish? Do they shift much?

Brad, To my eyes, he already looks dark brownish red, and maybe he'll turn more red with age. From what I understand, yes that is a trait of many Davis Mts. subocs - and bairdi too! In general though, subocs don't tend to shift much...

Brad, I really like the dark reddish-brown phase. Is that a WRP animal?

monklet Feb 02, 2012 10:48 AM

Hey, thanks Dusty. Yes, WRP, and is reputed to have been bred by someone in the area. I got it from Glades Herp Farm. They expressed a high level of confidence in it's purported origins. Does that sound right to you? Seems to be a really nice little animal. I love subocs

Robert Cox told me that they are actually Boy Scout Rd. locality in a recent e-mail. In any case, they are very handsome animals, and are certainly "northern Davis Mountains” locality.

Hah, so it seems you have a direct line for this info. Cool! Is Cox the breeder? Do you know if they are F1?

Ah, so Boy Scout Rd. is Hwy 17 right and WRP is just a particular section of that road?

Robert Cox was loaned and/or given a group of Subocs from Craig Trumbower, including a pair of these. Larry Geb Bailey has the other pair. Their adults are F1s. The original pair are deceased or otherwise MIA. So, these babies are F2’s.

The entrance to Boy Scout Rd is 12 and a half miles north of WRP.

I know Cox reads these forums, but I don’t think he ever comments(?) Maybe you could get more specifics from him (or Larry, or Craig) about the originals, but he told me that the original parents were found on BSR. So, i’m not entirely sure why these are inaccurately called WRP when in fact (according to what Cox told me), they are BSR’s. The habitat is the same, more or less, just rockier at WRP.

Very much appreciate all the background Dusty I certainly wouldn't mind hearing from Robert Cox. ...if you're out there Robert and want to share any other interesting details please let me know.
