Red Foot Tortoise - Male issues...

mizzizznight Feb 02, 2012 03:45 PM

So, I have a red-foot tortoise who is about 8 years old. He got his first erection and it's just...still out. He's my first tortoise and I cannot find anything out there to help me understand what is normal. His penis has sort of...shriveled. He isn't acting any differently than he has any other winter, but I adore him and can't help but be a little concerned. Any information/help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thank you!
Carrie and Ruby

yikes -- it's my understanding that males can "display" for a short time, but then it's supposed to retract. he may have what's called a penile prolapse, if you're sure that what you're seeing is indeed his penis. otherwise it might even be an intestinal prolapse. either way, he should see a vet, because the longer it stays out, the greater the chance that he gets an injury, an infection, et cetera.

in the meantime, maybe try giving him a soak in some warm water and see if that helps him draw it back in?

i found this information but cannot vouch for it (link below).

Thank you SO much for getting back to me!!! I truly appreciate your advice and will attempt to get the little fellow some help ASAP.

so is he okay? let us know!

Sorry. It's been rough. He went to the vet to have surgery to have it amputated. Things were going well. The vet doesn't leave unless he thinks things are okay and they called me to say he was doing well. A few hours later, they called to tell me he had passed away. Miss him so much.

I truly appreciate your concern and your asking about him.

oh, i'm SO sorry. i was hoping for good news, and i feel terrible for you.

my husband and i have had our redfoot since she was a hatchling in '03, so i know how attached you can get to them -- mine needed surgery due to some female reproductive issues (eggs stuck in her system that she would neither lay nor reabsorb into her body), and got an infection, and for a bit i wondered if she was gonna make it. there's so much that can go wrong with them, even if they're in the best of hands. even just anesthesia can be a risky business.

my sincere condolences. you did right by him, and hopefully he knows that, somehow. i like to think so.

I had to share this message with my mom. Thank you so very much. Often times reptiles don't earn the same sympathies as other pets. Your understanding and your kindness is so very much appreciated!!
