Starving Woma please read -

tektum Feb 07, 2012 08:10 PM

Ok so I bought an adult female Woma from a well known professional outfit on the east coast. I was told that this snake is eating small to medium sized rats. I have had this snake for about a month and i'll be dammned if I can get it to eat. The snake has sufficient everything, hide, heat, I offer it food at night and water. The only thing different is that the seller kept the snake in a rack system, I have it in a tank. But i've tried, live rats, freshly killed rats, frozen thawed rats, live rat pups, frozen thawed rat pups wtf? I mean the snake is an adult, it had to have been eating something!
I am not an amateur - I have kept everything from D'alberts and Amethystines to the typical Bloods, Burms, Rocks, Retics and Ball pythons - along with everything else. I have experience. Any tricks with this species? Thank's for any advice you can offer!

My woma stops eating around October and doesn't start back up until March. Plus, you're probably stressing it out by offering so much food. Woma's have incredible appetites so be patient, it will come around.

Thank's for your reply. You're right, i've been offering her food every few day's. The thing is, she's wicked active. Not so much looking for an escape, but just cruising around the tank like my other herps do when they're hungry. I'll step it back a little though and let her get back on her own cycle. Thank's again for your support.

It IS breeding season after all. Most females will stop eating during their cycle.
She's most likely active seeking a mate. Get her one! Haha.

That's funny, i've actually had an ad up on Craigslist looking for a male (or even just to stud). I bought this snake just because I have an article coming up on them and needed some for pictures but figured I might as well just keep it and breed it to make my money back on it. If you know anyone in Massachusetts or Pennsylvania looking to breed their male let me know!

Females normally are in breeding mode this time of year. Mine usually start going off feed in Oct-Nov. and it lasts until about March or April for the males, and April to May for the females.
Keep in mind they are a more inquisitive species so the roaming may just be the snake paying attention to the activity in the room. When they are hungry they will definitely eat. I usually use them as the clean up crew for my ball pythons. Any thawed rats not eaten by them are more tan welcomed by my Womas (except during breeding season).
