I am building my new reptile room and am in process of building the enclosures for my caimans. I would post there but the croc forum has been dead. Since monitors also need large enclosures and many have some sort of pond and/or plumbing firgured a good place to ask. First question is what is the effect of hard water on reptiles especially ones that spend most of their time in water like crocs and turtles? I am moving to the country and obviously have a well hence the hard water. My second question is about plumbing. I want to put a drain in the bottom of the preformed pond (prob going with a shower drain). Is it ok to use the bonding agent for pvc? (the purple stuff)will it effect the water? My plans are i am elevating the pond off the ground and to drill whole in pond and placfe in shower drain and then run a pvc pipe out throught the front wall and put a shut off on the end. There is a drain in the middle of the reptile room so this way when I have to do a water change in the reptile room i can just hook up a hose turn the shut off valve and drain the pond.

as a plumbers son i can say that the purple stuff is the pvc cleaner which in necessary to help bind the pipe and i would recommend clear primer and clear glue it will have no affect on the water as that is the same situation in which you drink water in your home it will be fine. as for the hard water i live with well water and i haven't had a problem however im just now mature enough to care that my animals have exactly what they need so don't quote me but im sure hard water will be fine

I did the same thing for My water monitors 133 gallon ponds.I would recommend going with a 3 inch drain if you can find one.I went with 2 inch and it takes a wile to drain both ponds.I read a post were a guy used 3 inch and said it flushed like a toilet.
