Chameleon help

vicslife Feb 25, 2012 01:14 AM

My chameleon is 7yrs old and is not eating real well lately. He's drinking lots of water and I just noticed today that his tail has a sore on it about 1/2 inch from tip. I am not sure if he did it to himself or if the crickets did it anyways any idea what to do for him?

First, he's getting up there in age so is probably slowing down just from that. His kidneys are probably not as efficient as they used to be so I'd increase his humidity level a bit and offer him more chances to drink during the day. Without knowing your habitat setup, humidity levels, and other husbandry it is very hard to guess what else is going on. The fact that he has reached old age mean you are doing things well.

About the tail sore...if your crix are free ranged you may want to confine them to a plastic bin so he can hunt them easily and so they can't escape, hide, and possibly chew on him at night when he isn't aware.

To treat the sore, dab some Polysporin on it to prevent infection. He won't heal as easily because he's old too.
