Water monitor

dav46 Feb 26, 2012 04:03 PM

So I had my Salvator out letting him get some exercise and he started everting his privates every couple minutes. Jacking his hind end up and showing his stuff! He has never done this in the past so just curious as to why now? Almost acting like he was walking and marking his territory or something. Maybe just getting the urge for a lady friend? He's about a year and a half old and 4 feet long. Any ideas on this behavior?

Hello Dav46,

I think you have answered your own question in some ways. Monitors do scent mark or use pheromones to communicate with other monitors. They also use body language and vocalize hissing sounds at times. You say it is lifting and everting and I'm not certain whether they disperse scent in that way or if it is a "stretch" of sort or display. Mine often rub down or deficate/urate and rub down. I have too seen what you are speaking of but the exact reason they evert while lifting up ??? Best to You- Mike S

Thanks Mike. I told him i dont think I would wave that thing around to the lady Salvators because it looks like a small alien living inside him hahha, but maybe the lady Salv's think thats hot- who knows?

Hello Dav46,

Yeah, hahaha, it can look pretty strange to us. Just so you are aware, I have had a large female croc monitor evert in a similar up lifted posture and they looked very similar to the length and width of the males hemi's but lacked alot of the structures on them. Again, I'm not exactly sure what it is about but it is interesting behavior. Thanks for the reply and Best to You- Mike S

Hey Dav46,

Did you see that Obi Island sal in the classifieds? I'm not sure if it is a female by the pics??? What do you think about pairing it with yours? Best to You- Mike S
