help?? new set-up for ATB question???

jxjaxj Feb 27, 2012 01:06 AM

Hi, I purchased a 5 feet ATB and I've been doing a lot of research but I just want to make sure her new home is perfect. I am housing her in a 40 gallon breeder tank (36 by 18 by 16inch). I have covered 2/3 of the screen top with a piece of glass for humidity. I am using a 150 watt heat emitter resting on the screen top at one end of the tank. I notice that the temperature on the cooler end is still 85 degrees. I am worried because I'm afraid the wattage from the heat emitter might be too hot if the cool end is still at 85 degrees? Also, the hygrometer still reads 45 percent after I misted the tank a few times today, when the ATB tank should be at 70-80%. Can you guys please give me any advice on getting my humidity level higher or what I am doing wrong. Also, is the wattage light bulb too high for my heat emitter? Is there something else that I should be using instead of a heat emitter like a different type bulb?? Like is the wattage too high that it will prevent the humidity from increasing. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Glass tanks with screen tops don't hold humidity well. If you need to use that cage, I would say cut a piece of acrylic that covers the entire screen and then melt vent holes in it with a soldering iron.

Amazons only need an ambient cage temp in the low to mid 80s, preferably with a hot spot for basking near 90, even though they spend most of their time on the floor of the cage. Your heat emitter should be thermostat controlled. It is , right? Also your humidity is fine now. You only need high humidity when you have one in shed. Even then you can move it to a smaller enclosure like a sweaterbox so you can really keep it wet and humid til it sheds. I've kept and bred ATBs for many years. They are very hardy animals so don't be concerned if your temps or humidity vary a little. Hope this helps.
