Favorite locales

joecop Mar 03, 2012 02:16 PM

I have mostly Mt. Kings in my collection, but have recently been getting more into Gray-bands. I have several locales and was just curious as to what others favorite locales are. So far, from ones that I have seen, Huecos are my favorites, but as I stated, pretty new to the GB scene. Opinions are opinions and I sure that varries greatly here as well.

I would have to say 9 milers, black gaps and highway 277s alterna phases gbks would be my favorite.I also LOVE dark phase Christmas Mountain alternas. Dont not get me wrong, there are OUTSTANDING phase animals from just about any locale that you can find GBKs.

Hmm, not sure. I guess it comes down to what combination one likes the best. Since graybands have a wide variety of colors and patterns. That is what makes it hard for me to decide. But out of the locals that I have. I would have to say my Huecos. Followed very closely by my Black Gaps.

I hope to get some huecos next year. I guess I should have mentioned my favorite that I actually have at this time. That would be my nine mile male. He has those thin white boarders at the edges of the orange and black. I love those.(he will be needing a girlfriend also---get to breeding Colin LOL ) The other problem is many of mine are hatchlings and they will probably change quite a bit as they mature. Hopefully get even better!! Huecos became my favorite after seeing the ones on Brad Alexanders old site. Those animals were/are simply stunning.

I think that Kyle Vargas is going to breed Huecos this year. You can not go wrong with any type of alterna locale. They are all unique in their own, particular way.

I'm kind of partial to 277's since that is where i found my first alterna. Black Gap, River Rd. and Davis Mts. produce some pretty cool alterna and are areas I've enjoyed herping even though they haven't been to productive. Bottom line though is alterna are awesome no matter what locale they are.

I hope to get a couple clutches of 9 milers. Ill let you know. As far as the best locality, it tough to say, but the reason I like breeding alterna is the palette you have to work with. The Huecos are pretty, but you can find nearly as nice light alternas in Sanderson, which you can breed to bright blairs, or blueish snakes with beadllike patterns. The variety that places like the Gap, Sanderson, or 277 produce is where its at for me.

I'm too indecisive to name a favorite locale, I've seen screamers from so many places. I'm most partial to light phase alterna pattern with thin primaries and bright orange. If I had to pick a readily accessible area I'd like to collect from, it would be Xmas with hopes of finding a light phase. Those are some of the most impressive I've seen. I hope to be able to list Shafter as my favorite locale within the next few years!

Bob, you have gotten some serious mileage out of that photo!! LOL. Great to see everyone's opinions. Yes, they all are awesome, and being a novice to GB's, my opinion will probably change every year. I hope to get to TX next year to do some herping and check out the habitat.

I am liking the Sanderson local, even though all locales absolutely rule!

I actually only have two locales:

My Black Lozier Canyon sweet little girl:

My Sanderson male, Colonel Sanders:

I don't think I have seen such a dark alterna with no orange. Pretty cool. You get that from Shannon? Nice sanderson by the way. I am really liking alterna lately, you get great variety, awesome colors, and they eat like an eastern king. What's not to like? (babies can be a pain, but many hatchlings can)

Yep, the Lozier Canyon came from Shannon.

Sanderson came from Damon Salceies.

Hey Joe,

I don't usually post on this forum, but thought I'd chime in. The Huecos are outstanding. But I also like Black Gaps, Juno's,& 277's.

joecop Mar 07, 2012 08:02 PM

Paul, I have 277's and gaps, and they are lookers for sure. There is just something about those real bright gray huecos. I have seen some photos of 277's that rival them though.

I like all localities. Ultimately I want my gb collection to be representaive of the full range of natural appearances.

Hwy. 277 is probably my favorite locality because it has nice specimens of both the Blair's and the alterna phases, including(rarely) "pinband" alterna. It also has(also rarely) animals with bluish-gray backrounds. I also like it because I have hunted it alot and have alot of good memories.

The memories are where it's at!!! All of my favorite snake in my collection have a story with them from a herping trip. So very true my man.

Mark me down for Huecos and Sanderson.

Coach Mar 11, 2012 09:12 AM

Love the clean light gray animals , blairs or alterna phase.

Jay_the_Snake Mar 12, 2012 11:08 AM

Coach,

Can you resubmit, your pics did not come up.

My faves are the ones you have all to yourself. Meaning, nobody passing you every 15 minutes asking questions.
