HR511 and state bans-list is growing

Gatorhunter Mar 06, 2012 08:52 AM

The Burmese python ban hasn't even gone into effect yet and they have already added the rest of the large snakes and boa contractors. Moving along very fast and should have all monitor keepers worried. We are next. Guarantee niles, waters, crocs and albigs are next on the chopping block. If we cant help the python guys which are more funded then us then we will fall even faster.
HR511 is on its way to the house.

Virgina, Rhode Island, Ohio, Illinois and West Virgina have started pushing an all out reptile ban to include everything that they can think of. (All can be found on fuana) Step up or sell out because soon we have to do one or the other.

I was actually surprised not to see them on the bill yet. They have to gain some traction then it's open highway from there.

Actually keeping an eye on our Blog is a good way to keep in touch with this too. You are forgetting smaller laws such as Chula Vista and Dane County. I have been quite involved in both Dane County, WI and IL fights.

A lot of cities have laws against them. I know in Dodge City, Kansas they ban all Varanids, even the small ones, claiming they are all extremely dangerous. Ackies have taken the lives of far too many people....lol. In Garden City, Kansas (where I'm from, about an hour west of Dodge) they ban "all poisonous lizards" which they might include Varanids, but were aimed at Heloderma. Thankfully they weren't smart enough to realize that Heloderma are venomous instead of poisonous. They ban all constricting snakes over 8 feet long, but allow birds. So technically you can keep an ostrich, but not a large boa (I've seen it once, and they say keeping lizards is weird). Gotta love politicians who govern with fear instead of knowledge

The true humor? I can legally keep a gaboon but not an ackie here in Milwaukee, WI. But the important thing is to keep an eye on even the small laws. The biggest reason I worked hard with the folks living in Dane County, WI is because that is also where the state capitol is. WI is under major fire for not having a state wide law on exotics. So keeping your eyes everywhere is important.

We are keeping our blog updated as well as our FB page when major stuff does come out.
