First Hookups Of The Season

AllanBartlett Mar 19, 2012 02:35 AM

How about something positive to post on this board for a change. So tonight I put one of my male Martirs in with one of my two Martir girls and almost immediately this hookup occurred. I also put the male Juarez boys in with the girls and noticed at least one hookup with them. I'll check for sperm plugs in the morning and hopefully put them under the microscope to check their fertility. Such an exciting time of year.

A solid hookup is always a nice thing to see! You are very scientific what with the sperm counts under microscope and such. I just wait for the females to look gravid.

A female can look gravid and then lay all bad eggs. I bought a microscope to take one more layer of uncertainty out of the equation. If I can't see viable sperm in the first male, then I have a backup male that gets thrown in with the female.

Yep all girls have had their first post hibernation shed. They almost always are ready to breed after that. I have had some animals breed though a few days after I turned the heat on. I chalk that up to a natural warm spell that we occasionally get out here in socal in winter.

Thanks for the reply Allan. Yeah, you don't here of too many breeding before the first shed, but I know it happens once in a while. I still have a few that have only taken one meal so far. They want live and they are just going to have to settle for f/t eventually. LOL

I'm in the same boat as Joe! I still have 2 that have yet to feed post warm-up. None have shed yet either. I was cleaning and paired up some Greenhorn animals....nada. And this particular male is over 40" and is a breeding machine. Wasn't expecting anything but one always hopes for that frenzied reaction!
