Dwarf x Super Dwarf

MikesExotics1 Mar 23, 2012 03:39 AM

I know this has been done, but I was wondering what would be the expected outcome of breeding a dwarf to a super dwarf? Would all the offsprings' size be half way between a dwarf and a super dwarf or would some be dwarf size and some be super dwarf size?

Thanks,
Mike

Nobody?

Your question is hard to answer as super dwarf and dwarf labels are used on many locality animals and some from "secret" islands that importers mystify as to how tiny the animals are from mystery island "x".

Seleyar, tanjampea, kayuadi, kalatoa, Bali, etc etc, including some from islands between the phillipines and celebes/sulawesi.

Been done in past. Babies grew moderately large and had patterns similar to parental cross.

My opinion from working with several island morphs for more than 13 years is that if cb or raised from neonate, fed heavily, all get pretty darn big. If fed judiciously, can stay healthy and smaller.

Thanks for your response Winslow.

Do you mean to say also that a 100% super dwarf fed heavily from neonate would exceed the claimed 6 to 8 feet?

The reason I was asking is because several times I've come across breeders that claim that their retics are 75% super dwarf or simply high percentage super dwarf and wondered if this is a guarantee that these animals would stay small (6 to 8 feet as claimed by many super dwarf breeders).

Thanks,
Mike

Yes, my experience is that super dwarf x color morph crosses if CB and fed well from hatchling onward will certainly exceed 6-8 feet as mature adults.

I would also suggest this is true of pure dwarf insular retics as well. Certainly modestly grown neonates raised well can mature at small sizes, but if fed to their liking and housed properly, these morphs do grow to large, but not giant proportions.
