Are rocks safe?

benzo48 Mar 25, 2012 04:19 PM

I collect rocks/minerals as well as reptiles. I like showcasing my rocks in my animals cages. The rocks also provide a shedding aid for my snakes and lizards. My question is, does anyone know of any rocks that could possibly be harmful to reptiles? I soak them in bleach water, thoroughly clean them, then allow them to air dry for days. Any answers or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe Uranium, lol..

I think you are fine using any rocks from your collection.

The only danger I could think of, is if one of the rocks fall on them.

Of course, you would want to put the rock down before any substrate, so the snake dosent tunnel under the rock, and the rock caving down on them (falling on)

After I wash my rocks I usually let them dry for a few days. It's a good thing because after washing a big chunk of jasper I have, rust popped up in little veins throughout the rock. Obviously from iron deposits but I dont think rust is good for herps.
