Lentils Good or Bad?

heatrock611 Mar 31, 2012 02:08 PM

I have a new uro. We have had him for about a month and I have had a hard time getting him to eat consistently. I have been doing alot of research and I saw a few videos on youtube that uro caregivers sometimes feed sprouted lentils. I did this this past week and my uro loves them! But, I have not seen any literature on how often they should have these. I know it is a source of protein but how much or how little should he have them?

Lentils are great in small quantities. However, if your uro is not eating much of anything else, I wouldn't give lentils until he starts eating his greens well. If he eats nothing but lentils, he's likely to dehydrate himself. Just keep offering a good variety of healthy greens and shredded veggies - he won't starve himself if he's healthy. Try a few mashed up green peas and some shredded butternut squash. You can also pull apart a yellow dandelion head (free of any pesticides) and mix that in. All those things tend to be very, very attractive to uros.

Most animals love mustard greens (the curly kind). My Uro loves his mustard. In fact, that's what he prefer to eat, so I try giving him other stuff, too, by witholding it from him until he eats the other greens. And you might want the temperature to really hot with Uro to get them to eat well. The temperature under the basking should be 120 degree...air temperature. they need it hot to digets the food properly.

I notice my Uro is more active when the temperature gets really hot on a warm day. That's when he'll come out and eat his mustard greens.

And on a side note: I do feed my Uro some dry lentils... It has a lot of iron, makes them strong and more active.

Sorry, I feed my Uro dry lentil seeds...not the sprout. I read the sprouts of any kind are very low in nutrients in general. I feed my Uro things like mustard green, collard green, dandelion green, escarole and endive. those are the healthy greens that you can use as a base diet and you can throw other greens (like kale, chards, nappa cabbage and arugulas) and hard veggies in occasionally.
