Selectively Breeding Zonata

vegasbilly Apr 02, 2012 12:38 PM

I have a couple of wide-white banded Zs I held back and am wondering if they can be selectively bred for this or any other desired trait? I'm familiar with the incubation temperature manipulations as proved out by Mitch but am toying with the idea of line-breeding etc. to possibly refine/improve this trait going forward. Surely some of you out there have experimented with breeding to a desired trait/outcome beyond incubation temp. manipulations?

Not with zonata but with other montanes like knobs and greeri and alterna as well, yes you most certainly can breed for any trait(like wide white) you desire. Typically the first generation will have a spectrum of traits but if you select like kinds that are related you should get more of the same. The reason I say related is because if you are breeding wild caught animals that look similar their similarities may be caused by different genes. But if you breed like kinds that are related then I think almost certainly any similarities will be caused by the same genes. I do think it's good not to inbreed more than a few generations without adding new blood but two or three generations of inbreeding shouldn't hurt.
