Veracruz, close to Xalapa, dry area

JohnBokma Apr 07, 2012 07:47 PM

Today, I found a large snake in a dry area east of Xalapa. It shares its habitat with Coniophanes piceivittis (tentative ID).
Length est. 60-70 cm.

Thanks,
John

The snake is Conophis lineatus. Hope this helps. Thanks, Mike C.

Yep,....as Mike mentioned, it's a (Conophis lineatus). Their common name is "Road Guarder".

That is Conophis, as the others pointed out.

They have a fairly bad bite that can cause pretty serious swelling and pain.

Did you photograph any Coniophanes piceivittis around there?

Hi Chris,

Yes, see pictures. I think I did the IDing myself, so I might be wrong. This one was found in roughly the same area as the Conophis lineatus.

Replace the 2 in the URL with 1 to get a close up of the head.

In a nearby area with water I also found some time ago Leptodeira cf. septentrionalis.
