Male or female? (Photos)

nocturnelle Apr 10, 2012 06:16 PM

This is my uromastyx philbyi (arabian blue) that arrived a few days ago. I was told that he was male and 2 years old.

What do you guys think?

Note: I did not write on his/her belly. He/she arrived this way.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not familiar with this species and even if I were, I wouldn't feel confident about giving an opinion on sex. However, what I can tell you is I have two Malis that were given to me by a rescue - they were supposedly a m/f pair and both roughly 2.5 years of age (possibly true-ish based on size). The "female" turned out to be male, but didn't get his adult coloring for an additional two years. So you never know - some are just late bloomers.

If you got your uro from a reputable source, chances are it's the correct sex, though anyone can make a mistake. And the color may not come in for a while, or even at all - there are female-mimic males out there.

Thank you for the reply. I am worried as I spent my money thinking I will be obtaining a male uromastyx philbyi. If there were not any male availability, I would have saved that money and waited instead.

I started worrying after people identified it as a female and have shown me photos of a 18 month old male philbyi with obvious blue coloration: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/403/12269750eee23e2128da1cf.jpg/

I got him/her from Doug from Deer Fern Farms. He has a great reputation so I was not worried initially. I tried contacting him again and included the vent photographs a few days after receiving the uro in hopes that he could ease my worries and confirm the sex of the philbyi. Just in case as mistakes do happen... No reply so far.
