Well, depending on where along the river, it is likely far more Gray Rat influence than anything else.

Looks like a Black Rat.

Ratsnakes in that area are generally black like that with the faint indications of a pattern you see in the photo.

Nice Gray Rat Judy!.....love those impressive "in-situ" shots coming down out of the tree..

Glad the neighbor didn't whack it with a shovel thinking it was a venomous tree-climbing rattlesnake or something..
