Acanthophis hawkei Takeout Lunch

Here are some more still shots from today`s feeding. I fed her outside of her cage to photograph her, it was an interesting experience. I had to manipulate her with the hook at one point and he did not let the mouse go even then. Strong feeding response...

What is the spine/tail lure made of? Is it actually a bone like material? Do they actually use it as a lure?

This particular snake did not use the lure yet but they use caudal luring, yes. It looks like a finger nail (keratin) type structure but I don`t know for sure. Some species have longer, very defined spines, others have very short etc.
