I want to get a snake and have been reading if I get a young one, it should be kept in a shoebox. If I plan to feed it outside of the tank, could I keep it in a bigger tank, say a 20 gallon?

20 gal is fine as long as it has some snug hide boxes and (depending on the species) substrate to burrow in.
on occasion snakes will get stressed if forced to be exposed 24/7 and go off feed.
ensure all of it's needs are met and any size cage should be fine.
also, some screen top 10 and 20 gal tanks have lids that are great for adults, but a little loose for tiny guys so make sure that is covered.
You mentioned feeding out of the cage and that is something I don't recommend. It is not good for you or the snake. Moving a snake after feeding causes stress and the snake can still be in feeding mode and bite you. Feeding out of the cage does not make a tamer snake but does teach the snake that every time it is taken out of the cage, it may eat. Many years ago I fed out of the cage and that was the time period when I got bit on a regular basis. All of my snakes are fed inside the cage and are easy to handle, including my reticualted pythons.
