The reason she's not eating...

Really Apr 20, 2012 11:54 AM

I was worried about Kismet not eating. My husband said, "Don't worry, she's just gravid." As usual, however, I panicked since when she has laid in the past it has always been in late July (the same date in July, actually, the 27th). So we went to the vet and he was right. You can also see some tiny rocks she swallowed while outside, but the vet says she'll pass them and they aren't anything to worry about.

The vet counted 8 eggs but there could be a few more hiding.

My female will be 2 1/2 in May. When do I need to watch for eggs and how is the best way to get her to pass them? She has never been with a male and no plans for that in the near future.

Kismet hatched in October 2002 and laid her first clutch of four eggs in July 2006, so she was three and a half. I had read that four was the youngest it would happen back then so it caught us off guard. She laid them outside on the concrete and looked like death. I rushed her to the vet and he x-rayed her and everything was fine. She laid again in 2008, two years to the day. She has had eggs since but reabsorbed them. This year she became gravid unusually early and I am guessing it is the presence of a male.

Thanks Susan.
Looks like I get another year and a half to two years before I need to watch for it.

Super early! Lucky you, now all you have to do is worry at the begining of the summer!

Petra's eating like a cow, (she's downing a banana a day for snacktime in the afternoon along with her dry/wet food) so I have nothing to worry about..yet..I'll be a nervous wreck in August!
