Great find in my yard.

OK, I lied a little. But the room is slow so I thought I'd post this. Our dog for over 15 years died a few months ago. I realized this was the first time since I was 7 that I did not have a dog. So Mil (the wife) and I headed to one of our local shelters. We saw this dog shivering in her cage. They told us she was abused and extremely shy and only semi trusts one lady at the shelter. At the shelter they put her in a room with us for 15 minutes and she just paced back and forth, slowly coming closer to us each time. Then she finally let my wife pet for a brief second. That was it, it just broke our hearts. I told the lady we had enough time with her. She said, ok, I understand let me find another. I said,, OH NO NO, we want her. I guess many people came in to see her but because she's so shy they turned her down.

Although she is still very shy she has really begin to trust my wife. Me too, just not as much. Plus we have never had a hound, let alone a tree walker. They are just different. There is a nice article in wiki. I'm still looking for good resources on them.

So, top pic is the picture that was on line. Bottom after 2 days we got her to sit on our couch. The lady at the shelter could not believe she got on our couch and will nap there. Still a long way to go, but she shows signs of improving

One of THE best stories I've ever read on any forum to be quite honest. The dog will only get MUCH more trusting in time, and you and your wife gave her a chance at having a fabulous life that ALL of you can enjoy together.

Excellent stuff man!! I have a miniature wire-haired dachshund that I love with all of my heart. He's my "little buddy"....simple as that!

Hope you guys can have many years of fun together now. Great story!...

Here's my little buddy, "Bucky"..

A Christmas pic I made of him..LOL!

Very cute pooch. We thought we would get more of a lap dog but.... The only thing is she needs a lot of exercise and my back is worse than ever and now a bad knee from meds. whaa whaa whaa lol

So I may have to dip into my garage fund to get a recumbent bike. To get her exercised. As a big guy I need a very heavy duty one and I found what need and want, but up in Wisconsin and NOT cheap. But I have to do what I need to do.

Thank you both for such kind words. This was the first dog we ever went out of the to get. For 45 years they just seem to fall in our laps.

Thats a great story. And a beautiful companion.

I have adopted several shelter dogs and have had great luck with them.

I think every current and future dog owner should read A Dogs Purpose by Bruce Cameron. It gives great insight of whats behind those soulful eyes.

What a wonderful story. Best of luck to you and your wife. I promised myself long ago that the next dog I get will be an adoption.

Ill see what I can dig up on hound references if you want. Just shoot me a private email.

Look into things on rehabbing mill dogs. You will find a lot of confidence building ideas there.

Having just love one of mine last month, I understand how hard it is. Thankfully I have two others here waiting to keep me company.

Congrats! And you have a scent hound. Maybe you also have a future herper in that dog!

I had a similar story with a cat. Went to the shelter in search of a cat to replace one that had died at 18 years of age. They told me they only had one, and he was too mean to be adopted out (They had named him Loco) and was scheduled for euthanasia that day. I asked to see him, and they brought me to a sunroom where he was resting. As soon as I walked in, he literally attacked my feet and legs. I loved his spirit! I talked the staff into letting me adopt him. Within a few weeks, I could pet him. Another week and I could pick him up. Soom he was the perfect lap cat. My cockatiel would even fly down and ride on his back. We were family. He lived with me for 17 years.

Tom, awesome.

I have 3 rescues. One male was so shy (actually mean) that it took almost 6 months of us working with him, but now he is very happy and a great dog to have. Keep up the good work (and keep being patient with him.)

HerpZillA May 12, 2012 01:32 PM

She's doing fine. seems to want to play with my wife early in the morning. Nice to see her act like a dog should. she's gaining confidence too. Walks off the porch with me, but does run back to the porch for security. Far better than running off.

Cindi if I seem to run into road blocks i will give you an email. For now i think she is doing well. Thank you for the offer.

Thanks again everyone.
