Please help ID this tortoise

Hi all,
This guy was found in a suburban neighborhood in North Texas. Clearly the victim of an inconsiderate young artist at some point, he seems otherwise healthy. Can any of you please help with an ID? Thanks!

Looks like a young male Russian tortoise (Testudo horsfieldii).

It's a pink Russian tortoise... female. It was painted... which does not hurt the tortoise in any way.

I'm willing to bet the owner is frantic looking for their pet.

(please don't pass judgement)

Yes it is most likely a russian but it "could" be a south texas tortoise. They look like russians but are slightly different. South texas tortoise is endangered so if you can id it as one please let him go. I found one 2 years ago in magnolia headed to conroe. He was released.
