Will Baron's Racers eat each other?

a153fish Apr 26, 2012 10:49 PM

Just wondering if anyone has experience or knowledge about keeping them together? I saw a post furher back of someone with suspicions of possible cannibalism. I would love to keep my new pair together but not if there is a chance they could become one!

Hi, in my experience with baronis, juveniles and adults can live together, and they will not eat each other.
In fact, keeping them together is the best way to ensure successful mating.
The downside-as with keeping any snakes together- is that if one of the snakes doesnt feed you won´t notice this for some time.

The only case of baroni feeding each other I know happened with some sibling babies who were kept together, they were fed but when one took its prey, another would seize the first one and try to eat it.

I hoipe this helps,
David

Yeah I know this can happen with any snake, lol. There was just a feature on the Reptile Report which had a Garter snake eating his cage mate, because they were fed together! Then I see guys on KS forum telling people they feed multiple Florida Kings together, and they all know which food item belongs to each one!

Do they breed in winter or spring? I saw some posts claiming both? Thanks for your help!

Hey Jorge, they do both, you can keep them together in winter, and they will mate.
Or if you prefer to keep them separate, you can introduce them like a "regular" colubrid in spring.

I know what you refer to on keeping bonded groups, I used to follow the kingsnake forum, and also find it difficult to understand, perhaps there is a basis for that, but yes, whats wrong with being careful???
I had two Epicrates which I kept together and more often than not they would take the same prey item. And one lost an eye in such a situation.
That said, this doesnt seem to happen in Liophis sp.
Sorry to digress but snakes have more things in common than things that separate them.

So to end on subject, you can do both,

best,
David

Thanks again, you've been a help! These guys are completely new to me so I am all ears! i'll have to post some pics of them. I am totally in love with them. I have always loved Blue Snakes! I have had Blue Garters, am currently waiting on a pair of Blue Indiana racers, and I also have a male Alterna that comes from a line which has displayed some strong blue hues, but I just lost my female due to un determined reasons. She was fine one day and dead the next. I'm still bumbe out about that one. However these Blue Baron's are helping me get over ut! Thanks again, Jorge

Those are amazing.

I put mine together late winter and into spring, most mating activity in the winter. I keep them in the hibernation room but with heat still on, reducing heat down to zero for 2 weeks, which I begin introductions at. I slowly raise the heat until the end of winter and then back to normal. They give me the first clutch each year.

For the kind words, and the advice! The female unfortunately didn't take well to being shipped, and passed away in just a few days after arrival. The breeder had one last female from the same clutch, but she was green. She is doing great along with her Blue brother now. Here is the new female.

Disclaimer: I do keep several snakes in pairs, and some in groups. However I realize that things can go wrong, and I have to keep a close eye on those groups, to be sure they are not being adversely affected by these living conditions. Also if one happens to eat it's cagemate, it is 100% my fault, and I know the risks in advance!

Yeah Jimmy they are definately Blue, and should get even more blue as they grow. The Dad to these guys only had a Blue Chin when he was this size, I am told. Now he is completely blue.

Congratulations Jorge!!!

Very good ones, I must say, especially the first, very light blue .

These snakes change color as they grow, the blue color may be deeper.

In Argentina some people call them Turquesas, Turquoise , as they sometimes begin life in a blue green shade,

Thanks Dave! I can't wait to see them grow, and then breed!
