Male or Female Chucks?

sstephenson May 01, 2012 12:38 AM

Please help me determine the sex of these chuckwallas. They originally came from Riverside County, California. I've read that specimens from this region can be lighter in color than others, and I'm not sure that I've made the right call. The first three photos are Chuck 1. The second three photos are Chuck 2. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the reply tgreb. I also didn't really see the dark colored, broad head that I was expecting on a male. But here's a photo of what has me wondering. Are these femoral pores on Chuck 2?

They would be if they were fully developed. The females pores never develop the waxy deposit-leaving round enlarged pores of the males. These, I would say, appear to be almost 4 years old or so. If they were male, the pores would be fully formed and you would see hemi-penal bulges instead of the very narrow base of the tail these two have. Nice very healthy looking girls!

Thanks for your help! I'm new to chuckwalla husbandry, so I need all the help I can get :^)

#1 SEEMS TO BE DEVOID OF ENLARGED FEMORAL PORES ALTOGETHER, INDICATING A FEMALE. #2 LIKEWISE THOUGH THE FINE BLACK LINEAGE THERE SORT OF CONFUSES THE AREA. THAT SAID THE SCALES SEEM UNIFORM. WHERE DO THEY HAIL FROM?

sstephenson May 01, 2012 10:50 PM

They're from the Palm Springs, CA vicinity. Yeah, being new to chucks, that black line had me thrown. Thanks for your help.
