yellow/brown snake in Utah's Oquirrh Mtn

tyleary May 01, 2012 05:32 PM

I live in the foothills west of the Oquirrh Mountains by the Great Salt Lake. This guy suddenly appeared on my driveway today. I think we scared him up with the weed wacker. He was four feet long exactly, yellow with brown markings. I let him go, hopefully he's keeping the gophers and voles away. So what is he? Thanks!

It is a Gophersnake.

Good guess. Definitely genus Pituophis, I assume Pituophis catenifer (Gopher Snake). Someone here will know which subspecies.

Very nice find!...so glad it wasn't harmed too...

That's a Great Basin Gopher Snake (Pituophis c. deserticola)
