Is the woodini not a recognized sub-species of pyromelana any longer or just not bred often ?
thanks,
Jeff Serrao

I obtained these as "woodini" before the term went out of style, or was no longer recognized, or whatever. It is the only kind I am breeding, although I do have some Chiricahua youngsters that will be ready next year or so.
Also known as Huachuca Mountain Kingsnake

Very nice pyros but I don't think they look very "woodeni". I thought "woodeni" was supposed to have low triad counts? I have seen a few wild examples from the southern range that have high band counts like yours, I guess that's why "woodeni" got sunk though.

All the nomenclature pertaining to sub species is really confusing to me. When I was in the market for my first pyros I wanted wild looking snakes that looked like I had just found them under a rock. The breeder of mine got his initial stock from the wild in 1998.

A fun map; really helps me as I am fairly ignorant of anything east of the Sierras! LOL!

Hey, that's my map! I made it back when I had a lot more time on my hands than I do now. Should I make everything south of the rim knoblochi?

Woodini as a subspecies was sunk 20 years ago. Hobbyist have hung on to the term.

Hey, Greg! Great map! I have only one suggestion; highlight the Rim, for us geographically impaired folks!

I could almost buy into a theory that an intergrade zone starts south of the Mogollon Rim. Rich Gassaway once had a great post where he said something like that in SE AZ maybe 10% of the pyros were showing the knoblochi phenotype, and as you go south that percentage increases. When you get into the heart of knoblochi country, about 10% of the animals show the pyro pyro phenotype.

So... I take it from this thread that the "woodini" doesn't actually exist per se.

What kind of King then, would be a so-called "Woodini" nowadays?

I ask because a vendor that frequents West PA/East Ohio reptile shows has them for sale and they looked interesting?

Thanks!
