x-mas/river road last night

normnun May 19, 2012 11:52 AM

Went to the RR and at 9:00 it was 99 degrees.Stayed for an hour and saw nothing. There were wet spots in some of the low spots and some greening going on but way too hot.Left there and went to X-mas and at 11:00 it was 87 degrees w/slight breeze. One 2ft suboc, one 22in glossy and one night snake. You could flip a big rock and find some moisture, but the pavement was around 115 degrees.Nothing on the way back to Alpine.Between the picnic tables it was 76 degrees.Should have stayed in Alpine but I had the itch and it had rain reasonably well Monday.

I hunted around Irran last night it was 75 degrees at 11 and stayed there until 1.The cuts are still wet from the rain we got a few days ago. I saw lots of dor and a few atrox.

I was on River Road Tues - Thursday nights from about 9 - 3. I saw a grand total of about a dozen night snakes, 2 longnose, and two atrox. I hiked up a few canyons during the day that were holding some puddles and pools from the recent rains, and plenty of lizards active.

Friday afternoon we stopped near Bracketville and found 2 central tx. whipsnakes and a coachwhip.

We ran 277 and Juno Friday night and saw 2 rough greens, a longnose, emorys, atrox, checkered garter, night snake, and a mountain patchnose.

Saturday we drove from Comstock to River Rd and back. Found a DOR tantilla between Marathon and Alpine. River Rd. was hot but found an AOR coachwhip, AOR mottled Rock on top of Big Hill, AOR gopher snake, 3 AOR nightsnakes, On 118 on the way back between Terlingua and Alpine we found 1 suboc, 2 hooknose, 2 longnose, 1 pictigastor, emorys rat, mottled rock. On 90 between Alpine and Marathon we found 1 kansas glossy. One more longnose on 90 and then South of Dryden we found this...

It had just been hit on 90 at 4:30am. He was still very much alive and trying to get away but the lower 1/3 of the body was stuck to the road and it was a fatal injury. This was the heartbreaker of the trip.

Oh man, that is a heartbreak right there.

What a shame.

What a bummer the alterna was hit. I've only found one DOR alterna. It was a dark alterna phase from near Sanderson.

Exactly where the DOR was found? Was it on 349 or was it on 90 in front of prairie creek cuts? We (lance and I) were in the area on Saturday night but im not sure of the exact time. I know we were "around" 90/349 travelling back in to Sanderson but several BP vehicles were running the highway and we got pulled over literally inside the town of Dryden about that time.
