Jason, very nice looking animal. Did you cool them? I have found pyro hatchings (at least mine) will not even think about eating until they have been cooled. Then they take off.

Thanks Joe

Yeah I cooled him for 2 months. Sometime they just take a while right.

What do you feed it? Live or FT? I feed mine live, as sometimes it takes the baby a couple days to decide to eat the offering, and a live one lasts longer. I have one little special needs child that is still on lizards. All the rest of my 2011 baby pyros are eating pinks no problem. I brumated them this last winter. They all ate at least a couple times after hatching.

Interestingly, all my 2010 babies are eating like bull snakes! It seems the second year is the big feeding year when they eat and grow the most, at least in my limited experience.

Hi Bob

I have a bunch feeding techniques for neonate kings and milks. I am just amazed how long these pyros can go with out food. 5 years ago a had a hatchling pyro that went 11 months before take her first meal, she eat strong after that.

My friend's enormous 13 year old pyro that did not start eating until he was 11 months old. He had been housed with a lizard, but the lizard outgrew being a suitable food item, and they cohabitated for several months. Finally the neonate ate a pinky, and grew into this behemoth! LOL!

Jason, the one item that I have NEVER seen any hatchling milk or king refuse is a ground skink. They are like gold to me. Once they have eaten a ground skink just scenting with one gets them going. I wish I had a ton of those things, but seem to only find two or three a year.

I think the non-knoblochi pyros have the slowest metabolism of any kingsnake. Knoblochi seem similar to other kings like mexicana, alterna, etc. and they can go a pretty long time but the "woodeni" and the "pyro pyro" seem to be able to go rediculous amounts of time without losing any weight. Anybody agree?

I agree. As long as they can avail themselves of the cool temperatures they prefer, they do very well.

I agree for sure. Yeah the Knoblocki don't seem to hold body weight as long as the pyro pyro.

Yep, I agree in a big way. Zonata babies come in second to the pyro in that catagory. I have had them go 9 months and look no different.
