NorCalAl May 20, 2012 02:36 PM

Anyone have these?

How much different is the husbandry from ackies?

I keep and breed them. I have juveniles through adults. They're a larger Monitor, more like an Argus, but not quite as large as an Argus. They are avid diggers and you basically need to take a good Ackie cage and double it in size but same temps and substrate type requirements, etc.. They're a pretty cool Monitor. A bit more mellow at feeding than the Panoptes.

Hey Justin,

How are flavis' temper? Are the similar to argus?

Jason - they're a bit more mellow to feed vs Argus, but not by much. They still rush the door of the enclosures when they see you, but tend to take the food without removing your hand. They settle a touch more once held than an Argus with the huffy puffy stuff. Bonus about them is they max out at 3 feet long w the males, not 5 foot.

To the OP - yes, there's a ton of interest for pure ones and groups of babies in particular. Very few are actually hatched each year these days in the US and the Europeans are after them like mad as well I'm finding out. I'm NOT plugging to sell any here, just sharing. I'd probably not put them in anything smaller than about 8'x4' floor space with a pair. 6 foot is small for an active 3' Monitor lizard.

I had the chance to feed a large male argus when I was younger, my uncle's friend had one and when your 7 years old and have never seen a lizard longer than a foot long, it is the most intense feeling feeding one a mouse! Thank god for 2 foot long hemostats.

LOL. I bet it was an experience! They're about the most zealous feeding lizard I have ever seen. I breed those too here and they keep me on my toes at feeding.

Could you pm/email me and let me know prices for babies? Perhaps a trio?

I'm not sure I'm ready for these guys yet, but I'd like to know.

Ackies and BTM/GTM are where I'm going right now. But flavis are so interesting!

When you say double an ackie cage in size - so perhaps 6'x3'x3' would work for flavis?

Substrate-wise, I'm using about 5" a 1'x1'x1.5' nesting box with around 10" of substrate. Nesting box is under a radiant heat panel to keep it warm (and hopefully make it a place of choice).

For the yellow trio I have, I'm feeding around 25 crickets and 4-5 cockroaches or pinkies a day. What would a trio of flavis require?

At what age does breeding begin? Is there much interest for hatchlings? (
