This is what we have

You have to remember you loosing your freedom to hunt the roadways took years to loose, it will take years if ever to get back.

At this point if have to deal with what we have, which is walking with a stamp and vest, we have to comply and further the battle down the road.

Snakedays is a great opportunity to work with tp&w and assist the poor biologist that have a tough task with little support and funding, this is a great chance to change the opinion of several people that hate you scum bag herpers lol. But most of all it's a great chance to help obtain data so that real science may be used in the study of herps

Jeff, I've already brought up the idea to you, and am going to work on a basic survey form to distribute at registration. It will be anonymous reporting of numbers and types of animals seen, their status (AOR, DOR, etc) and disposition (photographed and released, collected, salvaged, etc). I hope to aggregate all the data and write it up, probably in the SWCHR Bulletin so it'll be out there as a reference.

Given the anticipated number of participants this will be a tremendous opportunity to better understand population distribution, movement patterns, and so on for a variety of species, especially if sustained for every future Snake Days event.

I think that's a great idea, by the end of this season I'm going to put a book I carry with me that has the tp&w watch list that dr Andy needs info on. I want to start to obtain data as much for myself as well as for andy. If I get time I may come up with a web app where u can log on and post data that the science community can use.

You mean like this one that already has > 100,000 datapoints in it?

www.naherp.com

There are only 33 records for Terrell County in there. If people took the time (or use the Iphone/Android apps that are available) we could upload 300 more records with ease over the weekend.

Nafha is good and there's no reason people can't post their Snakedays captures and observations there but I think it would be good to have a specific resource that highlights just how valuable TX's herpers and Snakedays can be.

I had intended to go to Snakedays but it looks like I won't be able to now but I think it would be great if somebody there that had a laptop could have a booth where they could gather peoples observations on the spot.

There isn't any reason that people could list "observed during Sanderson Snakedays 2012" as a comment.

I suspect if you searched the NAFHA database for herps recorded in Terrell/Val Verde counties during this weekend, a good proportion will be from Snakedays participants.

I know but I'm thinking if at some future point we've got to defend our hobby again in Texas it would be good to have the ability to present an easy reference to interested parties. With nafha, if we refer them to that they're going to have to search through alot of entries in order to find the Snakedays stuff. So even though nafha is a great resource and it would probably be good to be associated with it, it's just MHO that a specific Snakedays binder would be easier and more impressive for them to look at.

Maybe, that isn't any reason to also enter the data into the NAFHA database. Doing so indicates that we as herpers are concerned about monitoring the populations of herps both in Texas and beyond its borders.

And searching for the records for the Trans-pecos this weekend wouldn't be a big deal. I suspect 99% of the NAFHA postings from Texas this weekend would be from Snakedays.

The advantage to the NAFHA database as well is the I-Phone and Android Apps. You can upload data with vouchers directly from the field (or later when you get phone service).

If you get enough data it would be nice to include it on snakedays.com and also include it in next years packets. Your idea is one of the best ones for the event

Just as an observations, Jeff…you seem more domesticated now that you're running snake days. Old Tank wouldn't accept "if ever"…purrrrrr.
