That's not an acclompishment. All you have to do is throw them in the back yard... voila... babies produced.

Mr EJ maybe you ought to move to Florida where you just walk around the yard and pick up hatchlings......Lets see some of your non-accomplishments. Here's mine so far..still waiting on some more to magically show up in our back yard......Richard

NOW THAT IS COOL to the highest order! WAY TO GO and they are very rare in Nature to boot! Are they from WC breeders or CB. Super fine my friend. You going to Daytona? Vic Morgan

kens Jul 17, 2012 10:48 PM

Vic,
Thank you for the kind words. We might be going. Just trying to get the trip planned now. Will look you up if we go. We WILL be at turtle talks! These babies that you see hatching there are F2 babies.

Ken

If the work was there I would... and I would also do the same... pitch them in the back yard and collect the babies.

I played along with you but you have no idea what it takes to rear tortoises outside. Year before last we had 12 days of freezing weather here in jacksonville,Fl. Did my Redfoots and Elongated come in the house...No way. I have them set up with thermostats including a 250 watt infra-red in each hut and a 150W ceramic incase the infrared-blows. I have females that lay in winter and it is not uncommon to check on them in the afternoon to find one dug in laying eggs. Sometimes it's midnight and in the 30's when she finishes so of course I've had to provide warmth for her during the process and direct her to her hut when finished. Just throw them outdoors and mine would die. Redfoots don't hybernate and neither do elongateds so its collard greens, mustard greens, Romaine, cantelope etc and the ocassional X breeder mice and mazuri through out the year. Thats not to mention the Dog required to protect the torts from racoons, possums, squirrels and rats. So EJ even if you could find work in Florida you better choose South Florida and stay away from North East Fl because you would be working Two Jobs! Your career and the Job of taking care of a heard of Tortoises....But wait you do most of your tortoise keeping indoors I forgot.......So as Paul Harvey says.....You know the news "so here is the rest of the story" Richard

I failed to mention in the last post that those 12 days of freezing temps. were all in a row. Every winter we have 20 to 30 freezes with countless days under 50 degrees which is a RED FLAG for the two species of tortoises I work with.

The Hawks and Owls are another issue that i omitted mentioning in the above post. It requires an enclosure that has a wire mesh top as well as sides. The benefits of housing my tortoises outside has paid back in a healthy group of breeding Redfoots and Elongated Tortoises that by the way coexist great together.
Have a great weekend................Richard

Moving from San Diego to NW GA... I really don't have a clue. Those bins are getting pretty small for the Aldabras.

Yea... I don't know what's involved in taking care of tortoises outdoors.

Why do you make comments then that belittle breeders here in Florida that are having success with producing offspring outdoors?

EJ did you not say this?

"That's not an acclompishment. All you have to do is throw them in the back yard... voila... babies produced."

Since I do believe you have kept tortoises outdoors could you explain what you meant by the above statement you made? Thanks Richard

Sure it takes hard work, on the other hand it's like Christmas every time! Kinda evens things out a bit.

marcp Jul 13, 2012 02:04 PM

Just for fun, a blast from the past! (Or is it???)

marcp Jul 13, 2012 04:12 PM

One more just for fun! Gotta love redfoots!

amazoa Jul 13, 2012 05:06 PM

Your babies are very cool and that "Blast from the Past" picture of all the stars just is a mind blower....It is like Christmas when they chip their way out of their bunker....Here are a few shots of my RedFoots and Elongated babies....Thanks for sharing your success....Richard

Oops! I should have labeled them. The first ones are radiata and the "blast" are spiders.

amazoa Jul 14, 2012 09:07 AM

My mistake....You surely don't see these species being produced too often. Got to love the dark black head on the Radiated tortoise babies. How large are the spyder's when they hatch? Can they be compared to a nickel or quarter? Your doing great with your collection. Richard

Hi RIchard. I got your email and replied but it was bounced back as undeliverable. I am glad to hear the elongs are doing well. I am glad they are in a warm climate. The spiders hatch out at about 1" and grow about 3/4" a year. You probably do not see many because I was one of the few breeders who was willing to offer my hatchlings to the public. I have hatched _ _ _ of them and hope to add to the number in the coming years (I can call you if you like and fill you in on the missing digits via personal email if we can connect that way; its not for forum eyes). Email your number and I can contact you during the week.

EJ Jul 16, 2012 12:28 PM

That earns bragging rights.
