Banana Iguana (C. pectinata)

jerry d. fife Jul 08, 2012 07:56 AM

I thought I would post a pic of my female (since Kelly only posted males) Banana iguana. This was purchased from Kelly as a hatchling and is four years old.

Unlike many lizards and even other ctenosaura, the true yellow C. pectinata iguana maintain their yellow color even when cold. Conspics, macrolopha, etc are dark when not warmed up, and have major color changes, however the yellow in the pectinata is strong even in a cold lizard. If someone offers a Banana iguana for sale and says it will "color up" and become yellow when basking, it is not a true Yellow pectinata. There are only a handful of people breeding this beautiful & calm lizard and hatchlings sell out quick. If you see a Banana Iguana advertised at a low price (under $300), it may be a great pet lizard, but it probably isn't a true Yellow/Banana iguana.

I have a couple more photos, including photos of hatchlings on my website.

Hmmm... Are they aggressive like the regular Ctenosaura's? I like to get one one day.

The Banana iguanas (C. pectinata) are not aggressive like the C. similis. Their yellow color attracted me to the species, but I assumed they would be crazy like the similis; it is their temporment & docile nature that sealed the deal and made it so I had to have them. They are a perfect size as adults, not too big like a green iguana. Calm, colorful and easy to keep, the perfect combination. The only challange has been breeding them, as fertility and hatch rates have been low. Thus the only negatives, low fertility & high prices.

Good luck if you get one.
