Feeding water snakes

AlexNevgloski Jul 10, 2012 08:48 PM

Do you folks usually try to keep your water snakes on amphibians and fish, or do you try to switch them to mice?

I've never kept water snakes, so I was wondering what kinds of success people have had switching their snakes to mice. Thanks, Alex

I have switched baby diamondback watersnakes & baby banded watersnakes over to mice very easily by just rubbing fish on the pinkies for a few feedings. A good friend of mine keeps green watersnakes & brown watersnakes & some have switched over to unscented, but some still need scenting. He thaws mice in water with smelt & the watersnakes get the mice & the turtles get the smelt.
