I cannot for the life of me find the list of banned pets in New York. I don't mean the 10,000 animal list for the city. I scoured the DEC and found nothing. I'm very interested in acquiring a Western hognose snake which is rear-fanged and I don't want to be breaking any laws doing so. Can anyone help? I'm getting really frustrated!

they are legal as far as i know. call the dec and ask to talk to the person in charge of issuing reptile related permits. the guys name is chris something. Ny allows no venomous unless you have an educators permit. the laws in NY are kinda funny. you can own venomous big constrictors crocs if you have the educators permit but you cant buy sell any of them within the state. so you have to purchase them from out of state.

Here is the NY no-no list unless you have a permit:

retics
burms
anacondas
scrub pythons
African rock pythons
crocodilians
water monitors
black/whitethroats
crocodile monitors
Nile monitors
all venomous

Western hogs, although rear-fanged, have not been on any list that I have seen.

not all scrubs are illegal. only the two from Australia.

Hognoses are legal in NY. One of the best ways to be sure, if it isn't legal, they wouldn't have them at the expos. And they have some beautiful hognoses for sale at the White Plains expo.
