Taking my snake with me on a trip?

SirKai Aug 17, 2012 12:14 AM

I have a young speckled kingsnake (about 20 inches long), and I was thinking about driving to visit some friends for three days/two nights(it's about a four hour drive) and I'm kind of nervous about not being able to check on him myself while I'm gone, so I was thinking of getting a large pet carrier and bringing him with me, hopefully something like 17x12 inches long and lining it with aspen substrate. I use an undertank heating mat and an overhead lamp to heat his normal habitat, so assuming that bringing him on a trip like this would be okay, what would be good, cost efficient methods to keep his habitat heated (especially if I have to feed him while I'm away)? Thanks for all your help!

It would be far better to leave the snake home. The trip would cause it stress. Just be sure the cage is secure from escape and that it has a full water dish. You can leave snakes for a week without worry as they don't need food every day as long as they have water and the right temps.

I agree its better to leave the snake home. I have 11 snakes at the moment an have left them for days at a time an they were all fine when I got home. I made sure they all had water an that all their lids were secure.

I agree with the above posters. Even very small snakes will do fine if not fed for a week or two, so three days is not long at all.

When I was gone for 10 days last spring, I just made sure I fed them all well before I left, and had a friend check that they had enough water. They were all good and hungry when I got home!
