E. johnii neonate

Shouganai Aug 29, 2012 09:52 PM

I have a couple of johnii I paired this year- female is a normal, male is a sunset. This was my first year breeding this species.

I saw building from the female, but she didn't get all that big. I gave up on the pairing for this year, figuring I hadn't cooled enough or that the female still had some growing to do.

Anyway, the other day I was checking on everyone and found a single, big (52g) baby in her bin! It is pretty orange and doesn't have much striping. I've obviously not seen many johnii babies, I think only two of us in Canada breed these animals. Thoughts on this baby, is it a sunset type? I thought it was unusual to have a litter of one, but I was happy to see any babies from this species! Thanks for looking.

Very nice. Can you post a pic of the underside of the baby and a pic of your male?

Shouganai Sep 02, 2012 04:40 PM

Thanks! I will post a pic of the male first, will get a pic of the baby this evening. Adult male's a bit of a picky eater, but great otherwise. I don't know the history of the imported (from the USA) sunset johnii here in Canada, but it is clear that the ones in the USA have become much prettier since this guy would have come to Canada.

I feel bad mixing the sunsets with a WT, but there really aren't many of these guys here in Canada at all.

Would you mind posting a pic of the belly?

Shouganai Sep 02, 2012 10:53 PM

Here's a pic of the baby's belly, sorry- doing this on my own, hard to take a pic sometimes!

Thank you. Its interesting that the neonate has greatly reduced black on its belly.

Shouganai Sep 02, 2012 11:01 PM

Oh, really? Sorry, I've seen basically none of these neonates, and I only know of one other litter produced here by the gentleman I bought my adults from, but all of those offspring are in the wind somewhere.

Thanks very much for the info.

I've spending the last several years working to breed out any traces of black.
