Had a friend ask me about possible complications with breeding siblings from the same litter. I figured I would poll the forum on this one. Thanks guys!

Or on the other hand both Hypo and Candy Stripe came from breeding siblings. IMO is worthwhile to do to some level. Obviously not to extreme and with forethought as to what to do in the future. ie out-crossing for vigor.

For me once siblings are bred there are two possible scenarios:
1) Most likely - nothing out of the ordinary, done breeding the siblings to each other.

2) Rare (very rare) - something different pops out, work the project in a responsible manner.

On the other hand some sibling pairings are already known to be problematic. For example Hypo's are prone to regurge problems. Depending on the lineage it might be very wise to not breed siblings. I'm even breeding hypo's to normals for out-crossed hets. And then two unrelated outcrossed hets are bred together for out-crossed Hypos (and pos hets to sell at normal pricing)

Remember, this came from breeding a sibling pair.....

As did this (several generations before).....

thanks for the info Dave! A couple local people are thinking of grabbing pairs from my recent litter and i've ran into this question a couple times. Thanks and btw, those candy stripe babies are SICK!

The real key point here is at some point the process will break and nobody knows when. Babies from unrelated parents are F1. Breeding two siblings creates F2 offspring. Breeding two F2 siblings produces F3 babies and so on. I know of one BCI breeder that at le=ast I spoke to him he had made it to F5/F6 without problems. WAY further than I would be willing to go.

By selling sibling pairs your buyers "should" be OK but if your customer did the same thing (selling pairs) those would be F2's producing F3's........

I would very much agree with Dave. I like to breed siblings together once just to see if something interesting pops out but then never again. I don't even like to sell sibling pairs to people, just in case they are planning to breed in the future.

I have a few siblings in my collection that I do plan on breeding together to see if I can get a more extreme form, i.e. Aubrey's RDP BRBs and Dave's lateral striped BRBs. But after the first sibling X sibling it won’t happen again.
