Beardie dying, making her comfortable

bigguyguy Sep 22, 2012 02:31 PM

I haven't posted on her in years, so long I cannot remember my old user name and password or email address I used, but my girl Sandy is dying. She is eleven now and the oldest of all my beardies. Within the last two weeks or so she has become very lethargic. This week she will not even open her eyes, she just sleeps all day. She is rapidly losing weight. I took her out of her tank and put her in her snugly that she sleeps in. She hasn't moved from there either. Does anyone have any suggestions on how else to make her final days just a little more comfortable. I was thinking about just binding up some crickets in a mixer and using a hype to put them in her mouth but I don't know if that would help at all. Any kind of advice would be appreciated.

I sympothize with you, I have a 12 year old beardy going through the same thing. He will sometimes eat, but very little and one thing I have noticed when they get older is they get very picky with the foods they eat. Mine won't touch his salads anymore, and he will only eat worms now, sometimes mealworms, sometimes horned and sometimes silks. It's hard when they get to this stage.

Main thing is you want to make them comfortable and stress free for their remaining days. Sounds like you've been doing a good job of that already. Try offering food that seems appetizing to it still just in case the lizard is hungry. Bottom line, don't get down on yourself, you have done a great job. 11 years is a really good life for a beardy.

Also, when was the last bowel movement? Mine has needed assistance getting things moving sometimes. As long as its not plugged up and uncomfortable. If you think the dragon needs it, and nice luke warm shallow bath would help. Just make her as comfy as you can.

All the best and good luck.
