Monday's sweet litter!!!!!

rainbowsrus Sep 24, 2012 11:34 AM

Love a little candy in the morning. For the last several days, actually more than a week now that I think about it, Dawn has been in her water bowl soaking. Bred by Ziggy but not looking huge. She was a little swollen and acting like a gravid female, refusing food and staying on the warm side. I've been hoping for at least a small litter with more evidence of the Candy Stripe trait. Checked on them last night and she was out of her water bowl and down in the hide. Hmmm, is she getting ready to drop? I had her due date as 09/19 so well within normal plus/minus a week to ten days.

This morning I found.....

Yup, she did have a small litter in her, 5 babies and some slugs.!

One of the slugs was odd that it appears to have been pinched and twisted and almost looks like two slugs connected by an umbilical cord.

Looks like two Candy Stripe het Hypos and three het Hypos. Just born so I left them alone to find their own way out of the sacks and into mom's cage. A few closer pics of the two Candy stripe het Hypos with a normal in the same shot for comparison.

This was a small but awesome litter for me. Does several things including...

Key pairing in proving the trait. Het x normal = 1/2(ish) hets
Not related to the hypo gene. (yes, not fully proven with such a small litter but fairly high probability)
Some more candy for my collection!!

Thanks for looking!!

Looks great Dave. A key pairing to proving your new line. In keeping with the language coined in the ball/redtail world I might call it a co-dom trait. I admit I hate that terminology but...

Still Congrats buddy, there's a lot of great things coming out in the rainbow world and I am excited to see a hypo candy stripe.

Thanks John. Although I think it's more accurately a incomplete dominant trait.

Small as it may be, those two striped ones are worth a full litter alone, not to mention the other three hets are not to shabby either. Congratulations! Everyone should be so lucky.

rainbowsrus Sep 26, 2012 11:07 AM

Exactly, the two stripes are worth more than the individuals. Simply the step towards proving the trait.

And the three others are normals, the stripes are the hets.
