Some Happenings from Last Week

waspinator421 Oct 26, 2012 07:41 PM

Just a couple things that happened last week. I was surprised to find Ochre and Lilac mating already! Only saw it the one time so far, but I sure would love an early litter next year!

The other different thing that occurred was that I got bit pretty good by Petunia, one of my largest females. She is normally a doll, but I guess she was particularly hungry and grabbed my hand and wrapped tightly. It hurt quite a bit, mostly because she actually raked her teeth along, and quite deeply in some places. Lots of blood from this one! The pics are taken the day after, so have already started to heal.

That is all.

Wow, that is early. I still am anticipating one more litter any day now...

Dang, she got you good. Was she wrapped on your hand and pulling with her mouth? Those are the worst/deepest ones. I grab them just behind the jaw to counteract the pull. Of course that leaves no hands free to work them loose but it hurt less and then eventually they let go.

I always chuckle to myself when asked "do they bite" - duh!

She did bite and pull, but also wrapped her coils completely around her own head so I couldn't get at her. I ended up having to pour vinegar into her mouth (when I could get to it) to get her to let go. She held on for a good 5 minutes.

A brb bit you? Seriously? That's Never happened to me...Ever!!! Hahaa...

I'll cross my fingers for you that the lock actually turns into something and isn't just brought on by a climate change or something. I've seen my crb's locked twice in the last week, but our weather here has been up and down a lot during the last couple of weeks too, so I wouldn't be surprised for that to have had an effect on things for me here...although it's not too awfully early for crb's to begin breeding.

I'm like Dave, one litter left to go this year...different animals though, I've still got a gravid kenyan sand boa that'll be my last babies from the '12 season.

Thanks! I'm really hoping it wasn't just a spontaneous mating that comes to nothing. We have been having strange weather here as well, and with him being a first time breeder he could have been over-eager as well. Time will tell!

This is one of my highly anticipated litters for 2013. I purchased Lilac specifically for her pattern, and it took me a couple years to find a male with a similar pattern. Now that the male has grown large enough to breed, I am hoping they throw some cool babies!

Good luck with your Kenyans! My partner has a pair of those. The female is HUGE, but the male rarely wants to eat, so he is still so much smaller than her. We are afraid to breed them for fear she would eat or smother him.

Good luck with your Lilac litter, hope they do get things figured out and give you some great results this coming season.

I don't think you would have much to worry about a whole lot with the kenyans and the size difference so long as you don't feed them together. It's not unusual for females to be quite a bit bigger than the males, can you tell me how many grams they each are? Males can also get to be kind of spaced out feeders, my adult males only eat a hopper mouse every 2-3 weeks, where females eat just about every week when I feed, and might even feed more often than that if I'd let them.

Not sure on weight. They are in Chicago at the moment so I do not have access to them, and my partner doesn't have a scale. If I remember right, the male only eats a few times a year.

Wow, that's some really spotty feeding...like I said, it's not unusual for males to be occasional feeders, but that's really spread out. Usually mine feed every 2-3 weeks, but then they also shut down on feeding completely for several months through the winter when I'm dropping their temps at night. That's males anyways, females are usually always pigs if they aren't due to drop a litter soon.
