Peruvian/Brazilian Rainbow Differences?

BoidMorphs Oct 27, 2012 10:41 AM

Sorry, but for the life of me, looking at pics here in the classifieds, I cannot tell the difference between them. I know Peruvians are supposed to get larger, but then I see brb breeders here with monster sized "brbs". I've also read head markings are thicker and darker on Peruvians. Then I look at my most recent litter of brb babies and see a wide variation of head markings that go either way? Everything I've ever seen mentioned before just hasn't cut it to differentiate one group from the other. It just doesn't appear to be so cut and dry IMO. When put side by side, what are the key indicators to look for?

I know very little about this subject, but I believe the only way to truly tell is with scale counts. Hopefully Jeff Clark will chime in, as he works with the species.

Some people will disagree with me but I believe that they are the same species. Peruvian Rainbows have not been classified as they’re our species within the Epicrates Genus. IMO they are Epicrates cenchria cenchria that were collected out of Peru.

Come on John. I thought you were at least going to tell me one speaks Portuguese, the other Spanish! I tend to agree with you in terms of them being the same species. My understanding is they used to be viewed as being different, but are now classified the same.

Ha ha!!!

I honestly don’t know if they wherever classified as different species or not. I haven’t really done the research on it other than to know that they are the same.

Hey Guys,

The latest taxonomic paper on the mainland rainbow boas makes no differentiation between "Brazilians" and "Peruvians." They are now considered, at least by the authors, as one species - Epicrates cenchria. Previously, Brazilians and Peruvians were different sub-species of E. cenchria, E. c. cenchria and E. c. gagei, respectively. If I remember correctly, the authors eliminated *all* subspecies of E. cenchria.

I'll see if I can find the actual paper, in case anyone is interested.

Thanks,
Ed
