Thoughts/Opinions on Ratsnake

scaledverts Nov 13, 2012 01:55 PM

Hello,

A friend of mine recently had an albino ratsnake turned over to him by the owners. We were discussing what species it might be and I wanted to get thoughts/opinions from other ratsnake people here. I know that ratsnakes are hard to place into current species designations of the common NA species based on pictures alone but I thought it couldn't hurt to try. We think it is either a Texas rat or Black rat but even that is possibly wrong. The more I look at the pics the more I see black rat in it based on the colors and girth but I'm not sure as there are not a ton of pictures of albino Texas rat adults out there.

Anyway, what do you guys think?

Thanks,

Kyle

Kyle,
I agree with the others in that the saddle count, shape, and color look like corn influence to me. Or possibly Emory rat influence. Maybe a hybrid of sorts. I would doubt that is either a Texas or Black pure animal.

Hey Allen,

After you guys mentioned it, I totally agree too haha. Corn snake never even crossed my mind because it wasn't surrendered as one. Still a very nice looking snake (and good temperament too apparently).

Most definitely not an amel Texas or amel Black Ratsnake. It looks to be a "frosted" snow, "Tequila Sunrise" (corn x gray rat) type hybrid snow of some sort in my opinion. All of which are "ultramel" corn x Gray rat lineage hybrids.

The very frosted voids in the middle of the blotch/saddles, the very yellow coloration, and lack of defined head chevroning and postocular striping behind the eye are all characteristic of these (corn x Gray rat) hybrids.
