Rhino Ig basking temps

danbristow Nov 30, 2012 08:23 AM

Hi,
I'm from the UK and have a male Rhino Ig. I was wondering what temps you all keep yours at? I hear and read so many different things! So...what basking surface temps do you offer your igs and what background temp range do you offer?
My background temp ranges from about 80F- 90F with a surface basking temp of 140F ( but I'm beginning to think this is too high from what I read)
Many thanks
Dan

My basking spot is around 140f. They definitely will bask at that temp very comfortably if it is available and will be alot more active than they would be with the 100F basking spot that the green ig people recommend. Just be very careful with the way you mount the basking lamp. Rhinos are very curious and they do climb. If the lamp is not extremely secure, they can knock it down and sustain burns.

thanks. yes my basking lamps are securely fixed. he has 3 in a row to give him equal heat over his body, these are positioned above his basking shelf. id rather use 3 lower wattage ones than one high wattage one to get my temps as i believe its safer.
unfortunately my iggy already has sustained burns...whilst he was with his previous owner as a skatty baby, he got stuck behind a radiator that was on and recieved 2 burns to his back. they have healed well and when i got him i had my vet check them out and he said they are fine-bit of a shame as he has lost some spikes due to it but he is still beautiful in my eyes!!
