Help with strange fecal matter

jtclark Dec 10, 2012 08:10 PM

I have noticed that the feces of one of my corns has been much thinner and almost a neon green color the past couple of weeks. I was going to try to get a picture of what it looked like in the aspen, but he was nice enough to let loose in the feeding bin this evening. Can anyone tell me what might be the problem? He hasn't eaten in a few weeks, but with the weather change it didn't really bother me until now.

To answer a few of the standard questions:

He is in a 32 qt tub in a rack
No new snakes in past 6 months
Back heat with a thermostat
Temp gun shows 83 in the back and 72 in the front
Aspen for the bedding
Feed frozen/thawed from RodentPro

Any advice or ideas would be appreciated!

urine and urates...

make sure it has clean water....

food doesn't matter if it doesn't want it....it will eat in March....

if it won't eat for a month?...try to find a spot at 55 degrees in the basement for it....???

I appreciate the reply and know you are very knowledgeable, so thank you.

I knew not eating wasn't the problem, he decides to go off food for a month or two at a time every year. My concern was the sudden change in color. He is one that "goes" 6-10 times a week, but the neon green I have been finding for the past couple of weeks is what concerns me. It's even hard to clean up when is soaks through the aspen and onto the tub. It has totally changed from his normal urates.

You think the color is an indicator of something more, or do you think this is just a random change he will get away from after his gut is cleaned out?

you can find stuff on what the greenish blue feces actually is...I forget....infections of some type they say....
....I saw it for 20 years....all shades of green and blue...not always....just here and there.....never bothered me....or them I guess.....there have been talks on it here on Kingsnake before....some people say Vet vet vet...I say...the snakes aren't worth what a vet trip costs...kinda callous....but true....it wouldn't matter IF vets did the miracles people think they can...but most vets just gues on snakes and charge for it....we can guess a whole lot better on here if people would just post good pics....

...good luck.....he'll be fine....

I have gotten all of the above on advice, some say no big deal, others say vet, others say get a fecal done. I'm not one to get too jumpy, but thought I would get some feedback to make sure it wasn't an obvious/known problem. If he gives me a good sample in the aspen that dries green I will post a pic, but I think at this point I will just ride it out. I don't have a ton of experience, but after 10 years I don't get spooked too easily.

Thanks again!

Well, I guess it was something I should have worried about, because I just found him dead.

Now I need to worry about the other 9 snakes in the room. I already threw out the water dish and hide along with the bedding. I wanted to keep the tub, but will bleach the hell out of it tomorrow. What else should I do at this point?

I put him in the freezer just in case anyone feels it is a must to get a necropsy, but at this point I was thinking it best to just wait and see if any of the others show signs and then get them to a reptile vet.

Thoughts?

Jeremy
