Not trying to pick a fight here, but has anyone else noticed that mice have tripled in price after the first of the year? Last year I paid .14 a pinkie and now they're .35 ! WTF??? Did something happen? Guess I need to just start raising them now if the price is going to be that insane !

The problem is two fold. Number one there was a shortage as the result of a failure at a large supplier. Fundamentally, when price drives consolidation of production you loose a level of resilience in the supply chain. The second part is that costs have gone up. Feed, utilities, equipment, shipping..... everything has increased and at some time point those costs have to be passed on and the shortage provided the opportunity to do so without the risk of loosing costumers.

I would expect prices to go back down but not to pre-shortage levels. Moving forward we should all consider strategies to minimize the impact of supply disruptions.

So let me get this straight - the rodent industry made a mistake so now we pay for their inability to run their own business. I get that part and to pass along to the customer, but pink mice were .14 each and now three times that amount - that is not passing it along - that is just raping the customers for their own greed. Just my humble opinion - all of the rodent producers will lose my business forever and I will spend the $700 buying and raising my own rodents from now on !

have raised my own mice for 20-25 years same strain with no mixig of other strains.
Yes the price of food and shavings has doubled and almost tripled in the last few years
Not to mention gas cost to deliver your .14 pinky. Yes welcome to economic recovery
where things are improving?????????????????????? get use to it because its probably going to go up.

....1990....I was getting 35 cents for pinks....price dropped when large suppliers started dumping prices online...computers did it....feed was $8 for 50 pounds...now...feed is $25 for 50 pounds or more....gas tripled....shavings went from $2.50 a bag to now what?...$5....6?......go ahead....raise your own...have fun with that....I bred thousands of mice a week....I had 2000 female breeders for 20 years....house smells like...guess what?...mice....you carry the 600 pounds of supplies to the celler every other week...you never ever go anywhere for more than a day...because you have to get home to feed the rodents...really...never went on vacation ...and I am 52.....you deal with that....then whine about 35 cents....gawd......pet shop pinks...$1.25....and NY city....I bet it's $2 or more....good luck....I wasted more pinks in a week than you use....so yea...breed your own....let us all know how well that goes.....

really...if you need to know how....we can tell you all the dumb little things you need to know...to breed mice well...not just breed mice halfways correctly....

have fun....not yelling or whining...just like to know why people think it's their God given right to Wal-Mart pricing....China don't sell pinks here yet.....

I agree that all of those play a part in the price increase. However, it still feels like the biggest issue is supply and demand, due to a major supplier falling apart for a bit. This isn't a simple inflation price increase, this is a massive jump, in a very short period of time. But, I think the proof is in the availability. Try to order what you want right now, and good luck. I had to order from to different places, because no one has enough to go around.
