Baby Viper Boas!

daneby Feb 25, 2013 03:12 PM

I'll be taking pics of the rest soon so keep checking this forum. I had a few nice litters in 2012 so I've got a lot more to show you (including some reds, blonds, & redbellys), but for now here are a few from 2 litters. These babies are a lot of fun & all are feeding on unscented pink mice now, well actually a couple are on fuzzys now.

Dan,
Huge Congrats! I believe this could be the first C. aspera litter to be produce in captivity or more specific in the US. Unless you know of someone else. I have seen quite a few gravid ones being imported from Indonesia - Jakarta. Kudos to you my friend

Take care!

Thanks a lot Orlando! I don't know anyone else here that has produced any, other then from gravid imports. I know I told you already, but in case you forgot, I had 2 litters born in 2011 & lost every baby. I think it was because I left them alone too long not wanting to stress them out. Viper boas shed the day they are born so with these 3 litters I started smacking them around with day old pink mice getting them to strike, & with a lot of patience & dozens of strikes they'd get the pinky stuck in their teeth & swallow it. So I'm pretty sure the key to keeping babies alive is to get them eating fast. They all now take dead unscented pinkies off tongs.

Thanks,
Dan Eby

I Meant to say I don't know anyone else here that has produced any, other then from gravid imports, But Jerry Conway probably bred them, & I did buy a few from DTS herps in 2008 that he said were cbb.

very cool! awesome little snakes, i could totally see one of these in my collection. how do they do as far as display animals...probably hide a lot, as far as burrowing into the bedding?

daneby Feb 25, 2013 11:22 PM

Thanks! They make great display snakes. They spend time in the water bowl quite a bit, & if you put in a piece of hallow cork log facing the front glass of the cage they will sit coiled inside it so they can be viewed easily that way. In my cages that have potted live plants the viper boas will often sit in the pot too.

Thanks,
Dan Eby

Congratulations! That's quite an accomplishment indeed. What were the conditions that got them to breed? I'd absolutely love as detailed a description of cooling times, temps, male/female ratio etc. as you're willing to give!

Thanks! I have a small group of C. c. paulsoni and any help in getting them to breed would be amazing!

Congrats on the baby Viper boas Dan but would it be possible for you to give some more info on how you keep the young. What size tubs you keep them in? What temps ? How damp? what substrait? How often do you feed them?
Sorry for all the questions but they are not often bred and when they are they seem to be difficult to rear. You seem to have the experience so would love to know more. And please loads more photos
Many thanks and well done once again.
Roger
