I had a Leo a few years back which was a victim of impaction from the sand I was using as a substrate. I am planning on getting another Leo sometime in the future, and I do like the sand as a substrate for a couple of reasons, but of course I don't want to have the Impaction happen to another one of my Leo's, so here is the question.

Hope this isn't a no brainer that I should know, but do Leo's swallow sand only while hunting their prey on the sand? If I was to put Meal Worms in a escape proof dish I saw in the Pet Supply store, would the chances go away?

If so, is there a certain type of sand out there that someone would recomend?

Thanks...

Do not use sand. They will eat the sand even when not hunting for food.

The best option is paper towel (but that's not very aesthetic), but you could get some flat stone slabs or tile to use.

They are natural looking, and do not have the problem of getting eaten because of their size.

Try Repti-sand we have been using it at the store I work at and I have used it with my leopard geckos for years without any problem
